Gibbs: Health Care Reform Will Be "Law of the Land" Next Week

It is about time. Even though progressive sacrificed a tremendous amount in this health care reform legislation, and even though it most closely resembles the 1993 Republican alternative to "Hillarycare," on balance I still believe this represents progress for America. I also believe this will give Democrats a boost heading into November. Up until now, Democrats have gotten all the "negatives" of debating health care reform, including a constant stream of Big Lies by the Republicans, while simultaneously looking weak for not seeing this become law. Once this thing actually is signed by President Obama, the entire dynamic should change, and hopefully "the base" will start getting excited again and close the "enthusiasm gap" with Republicans for this fall. At least, that's the theory! :)

  1. If FDR had been as weak and lacking in leadership on economic and financial reform and Social Security as Obama, the Great Depression would have not ended in his lifetime!

    Just saying.

  2. I don't believe that political futures get WORSE for Democrats going into November, should this bill pass. And for some seats, it may actually improve substantially. And even if it becomes the point on which Democrats sink, I'd rather sink big having passed healthcare than sink slightly-less-big and have nothing to show for it.

I see political disaster for the Democrats only if this bill fails. If it passes, I believe that it will strengthen the ability of the Obama administration to achieve other progressive programs. That is what the GOP really fears and why they are so committed to thoughtless obstruction.

I lived through all of the New Deal and the Square Deal know personaly what it did for this country and its people.
